Monuments

The city of Amantia had its own acropolis and a Doric style temple dedicated to Aphrodite, constructed in the 3rd century B.C. The best preserved monument is the stadium. A number of Greek inscriptions have been found on some stones. Although not much is known of the later Amantia history, it is assumed that in the 5th or 6th century the Aphrotide temple was replaced by a Christian basilica. One of the interesting discoveries in Amantia is the relief of the God of Fertility dating to the 3rd century BC. This object can be closely seen at the archaeological section of the National Historic Museum, while other finds from Amantia are displayed at the Archaeological Museum in Tirana.
